Early this morning (VERY early for me: 6:00am PDT), Nintendo held their Nintendo Direct for more information about Pokemon Sword & Shield, and they didn't disappoint! This 15 minute bit of news gave us new Pokemon, a bigger look in to the Region Galar, Gym Battles, characters, and the new mechanic that they are introducing called Dynamax!
If you'd like, you can read all of the full details and see some awesome screenshots over at PokeBeach, and below is the official trailer / Nintendo Direct for you to see yourself. Once you're done, come on back and I'll give you my impressions.
Back? Great! I so cannot wait for these games to come out! November 15th cannot come soon enough! The 8th Generation of Pokemon games really have me excited, a lot more so than what Sun and Moon did. The characters in Sword and Shield look a lot better, the region looks really inviting ( I personally didn't care too much for the island hopping in Sun and Moon ), and the Dynamax battles look to be much more fun than what the Z-Moves did!
Since this is coming out on the Switch, you can bet that the graphics have been upped and boy do they look AMAZING!! I recently go the Let's Go: Pikachu! and while the Pokemon in the game look great, the characters look really... off a bit. A little too kid-like. But I can accept that in the Let's Go series, as that was really designed to be a bridge between the popular mobile game Pokemon Go, and the core series. I'm really happy with how the characters look in these.
I'm also really excited for the 'Wild Areas', where you will have full free-roam of the character and camera to explore for Pokemon, items, and hidden secrets. You'll also see the actual Pokemon ROAMING! I wouldn't be surprised if this was a way to test out how an open-world type of experience would be, bot for the players and the developers. To keep the free-roam to select area's, and not throughout the whole game is a great way to get their feet wet in looking towards the future of a full game that is completely free-roaming. Add in the ability to link up with either local or online players to do Raid Battles against wild Dynamax Pokemon... could this be a way to test yet again just how to maybe, possibly, implement an MMO? Of course, all of this is me just future-speculating and wishful thinking of what Game Freak and Nintendo could be planning, but it's a great wish!
The last thing I'm also really excited for is that this is on the Switch - meaning I can play a core Pokemon game on my big-screen TV, OR take it with me on the go. But mostly on my TV. At the end of the day, I want to just sit back, relax, have a comfortable controller in hand, look ahead to my TV and catch some Pokemon. Maybe have a battle or two. Yes, with the games of old, I could sit back and relax and play, but there's something different with being able to just lay back and play the game on my TV. It's a different experience. And it's one I'm really looking forward to having with Pokemon Sword & Shield.
