Review: Captain Marvel Soars to Marvel-ous Heights

Zeifer | March 13, 2019 Movies

Over the weekend I got to see the newest Marvel movie: Captain Marvel. What did I think of it?

It was good, but it wasn't great.

The reason why I feel this way is for the that because we've been having these Marvel movies now in over 10 years, there wasn't anything in Captain Marvel that felt quite... new... compared to the other origin Marvel movies. And that isn't bad, but it doesn't make it stand out / great. And truth be told, unless you're the first movie of a Cinematic Universe, it'll be extremely difficult to make an origin movie a 'great' one.

Captain Marvel really felt like any other origin movie, and all of the characters played their parts really well. The end bad-guy was pretty much seen coming from the get-go, and the "twist" was also somewhat apparent, but those elements don't make it a bad movie. It just makes it a good, normal Marvel film.

Brie Larson - Captain Marvel

I think Brie Larson did a really good job of being the soldier of Captain Marvel / Carol Danvers, and because this was an origin movie, it is kind of difficult to get a lot of the flaws that the character has had in the comics come to the forefront, mostly because those flaws aren't really introduced to even comic readers until a few stories later. But with the introduction and origin of CM done, the next movie can really delve deep into Carol Danvers as a human, flaws and all. I feel Brie Larson can pull this off!

Seeing the de-aging of Samuel L. Jackson / Nick Fury, as well as Agent Coulson was amazing! The cinema-magic behind this is just... it really blows my mind. And they played their roles like they always have: awesome. While Brie was able to bring a lot of the seriousness to the movie, these two helped to be the "What the hell is happening?" comedy relief. It was actually nice to see Nick Fury NOT have all the answers!

Also, while I like cats (though not as much as I love dogs), I'd totally be up for having Goose around!

Some people have felt that Captain Marvel, at the end of the movie, was too over-powered. Looking at her comic history, I say not at all, and that they brought her power to the big screen without going fully cosmic! And to be honest, even with Captain Marvel, I feel that Avengers: End Game is still going to be a hard-fought battle.

Would I go see this movie again? Absolutely! Is it one of my all-time favorite Marvel movies? Nah, not really. But it is definitely a good one to watch again.
